That\u2019s completely normal. But when a\u00a0parent gives up\u00a0their role in\u00a0an\u00a0effort to\u00a0be\u00a0a\u00a0friend\u2014letting go\u00a0of\u00a0guidance, structure, and boundaries\u2014teens may start to\u00a0feel ungrounded and unsupported.<\/p>\n<h2>What Does It\u00a0Mean to\u00a0Be a\u00a0\u201cParent-Friend\u201d?<\/h2>\n<p>This parenting style prioritizes emotional closeness over authority and guidance.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0parent may, for example, share topics that aren\u2019t appropriate in\u00a0a\u00a0parent-child relationship, or\u00a0try so\u00a0hard to\u00a0be\u00a0\u201cclose\u201d that they gradually lose their role as\u00a0a\u00a0reliable adult figure.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0this approach, parents often seek approval from their child, avoid conflict, and steer clear of\u00a0setting limits.<\/p>\n<h2>What Happens When You\u2019re Too Friendly?<\/h2>\n<p>Research shows that teens ages 12\u201317 raised in\u00a0overly permissive environments tend to\u00a0engage in\u00a0more risky behavior and struggle with emotional regulation and impulse control.<\/p>\n<p>Without healthy boundaries, teens can feel lost in\u00a0their freedom and unprepared to\u00a0deal with the consequences of\u00a0their decisions.<\/p>\n<h2>When the Teen Becomes the Caregiver<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes, the roles reverse, and the child starts taking emotional care of\u00a0the parent. Parental authority\u2014paired with warmth and consistency\u2014helps teens understand what\u2019s expected of\u00a0them and what\u2019s safe.<\/p>\n<p>Studies show that a\u00a0parenting style combining warmth with reasonable control is\u00a0linked to\u00a0better academic outcomes and stronger mental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u2800<\/p>\n<p>To\u00a0maintain trust and connection, it\u2019s all about balance: be\u00a0warm, be\u00a0supportive, but also be\u00a0clear about limits.
