A\u00a0new study<\/a> from American pediatricians has found that one in\u00a0two teenagers use their phone at\u00a0night. Seventeen percent are woken up\u00a0by\u00a0notifications and\u00a020% reach for the screen on\u00a0their own in\u00a0the middle of\u00a0the night. Disrupted sleep takes a\u00a0serious toll on\u00a0kids\u2019 mental health triggering insomnia, depression, and struggles at\u00a0school.<\/p>\n

Research shows teenagers are losing 8\u20139 hours of\u00a0sleep per week due to\u00a0constant screen use. Scientists have raised these concerns before, but this particular study points to\u00a0an\u00a0unexpected cause: the problem isn\u2019t algorithms or\u00a0boredom. It\u2019s the example parents set. Kids don\u2019t listen to\u00a0what we\u00a0tell them\u00a0\u2014 they watch what we\u00a0do.<\/p>\n

and this isn\u2019t just a\u00a0US story. In\u00a0Italy, one in\u00a0three teenagers<\/a> have trouble falling asleep, directly linked to\u00a0device use before bed. In\u00a0Spain, 42% of\u00a0teens<\/a> admit their phone hurts their sleep, and\u00a037% go\u00a0to\u00a0bed later because of\u00a0screens. In\u00a0South Korea, 99% of\u00a0teenagers<\/a> own a\u00a0smartphone, their daily screen time averages 5\u00a0hours, and nearly\u00a040% show signs of\u00a0overdependence. Different countries, same pattern.<\/p>\n

What to\u00a0do\u00a0about it<\/h2>\n

Negotiating with a\u00a0teenager is\u00a0harder than with a\u00a0younger child\u00a0\u2014 a\u00a0simple screen time block won\u2019t cut it\u00a0without a\u00a0real conversation. Here\u2019s what can actually help.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0deal, not a\u00a0ban.<\/strong> Agree on\u00a0a\u00a0rule together: after 11\u00a0p.m., all phones charge in\u00a0another room. All phones. Yes, including yours.<\/p>\n

Light-touch parental controls.<\/strong> The Findmykids app shows how much time your teenager spends online\u00a0\u2014 you can look at\u00a0the data together. If\u00a0it\u00a0worries you, talk through solutions with your teen rather than just imposing limits.<\/p>\n

Lead by\u00a0example.<\/strong> This one keeps coming up\u00a0for a\u00a0reason. Until you find something other than your phone to\u00a0occupy your evenings, the rest of\u00a0the family will keep doing the same.<\/p>\n\t\t
