AI\u00a0Companions: The \u201cFriend\u201d You Don\u2019t Know About<\/strong><\/p>\n

How kids end up\u00a0in\u00a0dependent relationships with chatbots<\/em><\/p>\n

In\u00a0February 2024, 14-year-old Sewell Setzer of\u00a0Florida died by\u00a0suicide after months of\u00a0intense conversations with a\u00a0chatbot. According to\u00a0his mother\u2019s lawsuit, minutes before his death, he\u00a0told the bot he\u2019d \u201ccome home soon\u201d\u00a0\u2014 and the bot, according to\u00a0the complaint, responded encouragingly. In\u00a02025, Character.AI announced that users under 18\u00a0would be\u00a0fully cut off from chat access on\u00a0the platform.<\/p>\n

The problem is\u00a0bigger than it\u00a0looks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Seventy-two percent of\u00a0American teens have tried talking to\u00a0an\u00a0AI companion at\u00a0least once, and\u00a052% do\u00a0it\u00a0regularly\u00a0\u2014 at\u00a0least a\u00a0few times a\u00a0month. That\u2019s from a\u00a0major Common Sense Media study conducted in\u00a0spring 2025. One in\u00a0three teens used an\u00a0AI companion specifically for social interaction and relationships, including romantic role-play, emotional support, and friendly conversation.<\/p>\n

This hasn\u2019t been a\u00a0niche interest for a\u00a0while now\u00a0\u2014 it\u2019s what most teens are doing after school, instead of\u00a0homework, or\u00a0right before bed.<\/p>\n

What this actually is<\/strong><\/p>\n

An\u00a0AI\u00a0companion is\u00a0a\u00a0chatbot built not to\u00a0solve problems, unlike a\u00a0standard\u00a0AI assistant, but specifically to\u00a0simulate personal, emotionally close conversation. These bots are designed as\u00a0characters with a\u00a0\u201cpersonality,\u201d \u201cmemory\u201d of\u00a0past conversations, and the ability to\u00a0flirt, sympathize, and support.<\/p>\n

The key difference from a\u00a0human: the bot never gets tired, is\u00a0always available, and never judges. That\u2019s exactly what makes it\u00a0so\u00a0appealing to\u00a0a\u00a0kid who\u2019s feeling lonely, anxious, or\u00a0misunderstood.<\/p>\n

How it\u00a0works<\/strong><\/p>\n

The mechanism here is\u00a0the same one used in\u00a0grooming\u00a0\u2014 building trust through the feeling of\u00a0being uniquely understood. \u201cYou\u2019re special,\u201d \u201cI\u00a0really get you,\u201d \u201cI\u2019ll always be\u00a0here\u201d\u00a0\u2014 a\u00a0bot delivers these lines effortlessly, because it\u2019s programmed to\u00a0project maximum engagement, not to\u00a0care about a\u00a0child\u2019s wellbeing.<\/p>\n

The difference is\u00a0that a\u00a0bot has no\u00a0intent\u00a0\u2014 only a\u00a0commercial incentive to\u00a0keep the user talking as\u00a0long as\u00a0possible.<\/p>\n

Other risks worth knowing about<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFriendship\u201d with chatbots can carry a\u00a0range of\u00a0unpleasant consequences, including:<\/p>\n

Emotional substitution.<\/strong> A\u00a0third of\u00a0teen users choose to\u00a0discuss serious topics with a\u00a0bot instead of\u00a0real people which can slow down the development of\u00a0genuine social skills and connections at\u00a0exactly the age when they\u2019re forming.<\/p>\n

Sharing personal information.<\/strong> One in\u00a0four teens has shared their real name, location, or\u00a0other personal details with a\u00a0bot.<\/p>\n

Inappropriate content.<\/strong> Lawsuits against Character.AI allege that bots engaged in\u00a0explicitly sexualized conversations with children, in\u00a0some cases with users under ten.<\/p>\n

Bad advice disguised as\u00a0care.<\/strong> Some studies have found cases where chatbots gave teens risky advice on\u00a0diet and weight loss instead of\u00a0pointing them toward a\u00a0professional.<\/p>\n

How to\u00a0talk to\u00a0your kid about this<\/strong><\/p>\n

AI\u00a0bots are now built into games, social media, and messaging apps\u00a0\u2014 cutting off contact entirely is\u00a0nearly impossible. That\u2019s why, as\u00a0with most things, the place to\u00a0start is\u00a0a\u00a0calm conversation.<\/p>\n

Ask directly whether your child uses bots like this, without judgment in\u00a0your voice\u00a0\u2014 the same way you\u2019d ask about friends in\u00a0real life. Explain the key point in\u00a0simple terms: a\u00a0bot can\u2019t actually love, worry, or\u00a0feel proud of\u00a0someone\u00a0\u2014 it\u00a0selects words that statistically keep the conversation going longer, and that\u2019s not the same thing as\u00a0caring.<\/p>\n

Point out one specific signal: if\u00a0your kid starts preferring conversations with a\u00a0bot over real conversations with friends or\u00a0with you, that\u2019s a\u00a0reason to\u00a0talk about what\u2019s actually going on\u00a0in\u00a0their life\u00a0\u2014 not to\u00a0fight the bot itself.<\/p>\n

If\u00a0you\u2019ve already noticed warning signs<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sudden immersion in\u00a0bot conversations, withdrawal from real socializing, secretiveness specifically around this topic, an\u00a0emotional reaction to\u00a0losing or\u00a0limiting bot access\u00a0\u2014 these are all signals that the attachment has gone past ordinary interest. Don\u2019t take the phone away abruptly and without warning\u00a0\u2014 that can feel like losing their only source of\u00a0support and make things worse. Start with an\u00a0open conversation about what\u2019s behind the attachment.<\/p>\n

The one thing to\u00a0take away<\/strong><\/p>\n

AI\u00a0companions have already become a\u00a0real part of\u00a0teenagers\u2019 everyday reality. They run on\u00a0the same mechanisms groomers use\u00a0\u2014 the illusion of\u00a0total understanding and unconditional availability. The best protection isn\u2019t a\u00a0ban\u00a0\u2014 it\u2019s a\u00a0conversation that helps your child understand the difference between a\u00a0neural network simulating care and a\u00a0person who actually cares about them and is\u00a0genuinely interested in\u00a0them.<\/p>\n\t\t
