Not a stranger \u2014 a coach, a family friend, an older teen from their friend group, someone from an online game.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left\" style=\"text-align: left;\">What grooming actually is<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Grooming is a process in which an adult deliberately and gradually builds a close, trusting relationship with a child to prepare the ground for sexual abuse. It&#8217;s not a single act \u2014 it&#8217;s a strategy stretched over time. That&#8217;s exactly why it&#8217;s so hard to spot from the outside: each individual step in the chain looks ordinary on its own. What should raise concern is the sequence, not any one moment.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The five stages<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"has-text-align-left\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\r\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Selection.<\/strong> Groomers often look for a child with certain vulnerabilities \u2014 a lack of attention at home, low self-esteem, a need to be heard. This doesn&#8217;t mean kids from close, engaged families are fully protected \u2014 sometimes the opposite: where parental oversight is relaxed because parents trust a &#8220;very mature, responsible&#8221; child, that child can be more exposed, not less.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Access.<\/strong> The groomer gradually engineers situations to be alone with the child more often, while quietly reducing the number of other people around. Often, they work just as hard to build trust with the parents.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Trust.<\/strong> The child is given something they often lack \u2014 the feeling of truly being seen. &#8220;You&#8217;re not like other kids,&#8221; &#8220;You understand me better than adults do.&#8221; It works because it exploits a completely normal human need: to be noticed and to matter.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Desensitization.<\/strong> A gradual, step-by-step normalization of physical contact and conversation topics \u2014 each step slightly bolder than the last, never enough to trigger an obvious protest.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Maintenance.<\/strong> Even after something has already happened, the groomer keeps control through shame, guilt, or exaggerated care to keep the child quiet. This is part of why children rarely disclose right away.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left\" style=\"text-align: left;\">How this plays out online<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">First contact often happens in games like Roblox or Fortnite, where kids openly chat with strangers, then moves somewhere parents can&#8217;t easily see \u2014 Discord, for instance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"highlight_PastelYellow\" style=\"text-align: left;\">For scale: in 2025 alone, Discord referred nearly 490,000 reports of suspected child sexual exploitation to the National Center for Missing &amp; Exploited Children \u2014 more than 1,300 reports a day. NCMEC received 1.4 million total reports of online enticement in 2025, including over 80,000 cases of sextortion.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A newer risk point: AI chatbots and companions. The mechanism mirrors the trust-building stage above. The bot is always available, never says no, and creates the illusion of being the one who truly understands the child. (More on this in an upcoming lesson.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Five things you can do<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Learn the facts \u2014 you&#8217;re already doing that. Minimize situations where a child and an adult are alone together with no chance of being seen, online or off. Talk to your child about this regularly \u2014 yes, even if they &#8220;already know.&#8221; And if you notice something, try not to react with alarm. Staying close and trusted matters more than anything in that moment.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left\" style=\"text-align: left;\">How to talk to your kid so they tell you<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Explain the difference between a good secret and a bad one: a good secret is temporary and ends up making everyone happy like a birthday surprise. A bad secret is one someone asks you to never tell anyone, especially not your parents.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"highlight_PastelGreen\" style=\"text-align: left;\">And most importantly, say this out loud before anything ever happens: &#8220;Whatever happens, you can tell me, and I won&#8217;t be angry.&#8221; Kids stay quiet mostly because they&#8217;re afraid of how you&#8217;ll react. If they already know your reaction in advance, they&#8217;re far more likely to come to you.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If they do start talking \u2014 listen more than you speak. Don&#8217;t interrupt, and try not to let your face show panic or horror.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left\" style=\"text-align: left;\">If you&#8217;ve noticed something<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Don&#8217;t confront the suspected person directly \u2014 it can lead to deleted messages or, if there&#8217;s already an element of blackmail, escalation. Save everything you can: screenshots, usernames, profile links, message dates. And don&#8217;t blame the child \u2014 the responsibility is entirely on the adult who built the situation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The one thing to take away<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"highlight_PastelYellow\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Grooming doesn&#8217;t work because kids are careless or naive. It works because it disguises itself as friendship, attention, and care \u2014 things every child genuinely needs. The best protection isn&#8217;t total control.
