‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ and Other Marvel Movies: Are They Kid-Friendly? Age Ratings and Psychologist’s Review

This summer’s big hit, Deadpool and Wolverine, has taken the superhero world by storm. Fans of the Marvel universe eagerly awaited the pairing of these two iconic characters. Of course, many parents might want to share the joy of watching their favorite franchise with their kids. But there’s one key question: is this film appropriate for children? Especially since Deadpool and Wolverine has earned an R rating. What about other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)? Let’s break it down together.

The story of Deadpool as a movie character began in 2016. Although he’s been a part of Marvel’s comic book world for over 30 years, created by artist Rob Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza, it wasn’t until his first film that the character truly took off with mainstream audiences.

It’s important to note that Deadpool is mostly seen as an antihero. However, viewers have come to love the “Merc with a Mouth” so much that he became a regular presence in Marvel films before finally getting his own movie—Deadpool. Then came Deadpool 2, and now, in 2024, we have Deadpool and Wolverine.

Over time, Deadpool evolves from an antihero to a character with his own twisted sense of honor and dignity, dark humor, and a damaged psyche.

The Rating for Deadpool and Wolverine

The creators of the Deadpool films always intended for these movies to have an R rating, given that the character is far from a role model. He swears, cracks jokes about sex, drugs, and violence, and kills without mercy while mocking his victims. Portraying a personality like this just isn’t possible within a PG or PG-13 rating. Yes, the jokes and visual effects are fantastic, but the entire production is clearly aimed at adult audiences.

This time around, the studio that developed the movie, now owned by Disney after it acquired Fox, continues with the same formula. Ryan Reynolds stars as Deadpool once again, delivering his signature dark humor and irreverent style. The film is stuffed with non-stop action and explicit content, and it’s full of violent fight scenes, fast-paced humor, and wild stunts. The overall motion of the film keeps viewers constantly engaged, making it another hit in the Deadpool series.

While the combination of Reynolds’ performance and Wolverine’s return makes the movie highly anticipated, it’s important to remember that this film is not designed for children or younger teens. The level of violence and adult humor reflects the film’s R rating.

What’s the Film About? (Spoilers Ahead!)

The new film, Deadpool and Wolverine, focuses on Deadpool’s final transformation from antihero to hero. Wolverine’s death (in Logan, 2017) caused the reality in which he died to rapidly decay. The Time Variance Authority (TVA) decides to accelerate the destruction of this universe, which is where Deadpool and his loved ones live.

Naturally, this doesn’t sit well with Deadpool, so he decides to bring Wolverine back to life. Deadpool transfers Logan from an alternate universe into his own world, and their journey begins.

The characters don’t like each other and want to end this adventure as quickly as possible. Logan from the alternate world has his own set of traumas and struggles. As the plot thickens, we learn more about this new Wolverine, and we see not only the development of the relationship between the two main characters but also their inner transformations. Slowly, the goodness in their hearts prevails, and together, they defeat evil.

Most of the humor is built on a deep knowledge of the Marvel universe, frequent breaking of the fourth wall (Deadpool often addresses the audience, poking fun at typical movie tropes or commenting on what’s happening), and plenty of crude, often raunchy jokes. The creators packed in a lot of beloved characters from previous films to play on the audience’s nostalgia.

It’s funny and engaging at times, but the sheer number of characters can sometimes overwhelm the plot. Many of the references will also be lost on viewers unfamiliar with earlier movies, animated series, or comics.

Should Kids Watch This Movie?

Age ratings exist for a reason. They signal that certain content is not suitable for children below a specific age. Whether or not you allow your children to watch age-inappropriate films is ultimately a parental decision.

If you’re looking to be the “cool parent,” sure, you might take your kid to this movie. BUT! As a psychologist, I wouldn’t recommend allowing children under 16 to see this film. The blurred lines between good and evil, the morally ambiguous main character and the toilet humor aren’t exactly what our kids need.

Young kids, especially preschool and elementary-aged children, don’t fully understand sarcasm. A character like Deadpool, with his antics and cynical view of life, could become a problematic role model. Meanwhile, the main theme of the film (about saving loved ones) will likely go unnoticed by younger viewers.

Tweens and early teens will probably enjoy watching this “forbidden fruit,” but they may come away with the idea that being an adult means swearing, being cynical, and engaging in risky behavior.

Teens aged 16+ probably won’t ask for parental permission to watch the film. However, it’s still a good idea to talk to them—before or after the movie—about its themes, what they expect to see, and what they actually took away from it.

In any case, before you decide to ignore the age restrictions, watch the movie yourself and ask, “Is this really what I want to expose my child’s developing mind to?” Remember that films made for adults are designed to be as engaging and understandable as possible for a mature audience. Kids, especially those unfamiliar with the Marvel context, will likely miss out on much of the story and mainly enjoy the crude jokes (which they find funny from a young age) and the over-the-top action, of which there is plenty in this film. If you want to introduce your kids to cinema culture, start with movies that are recommended for their age.

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Is Superhero Movies Suitable for Children?

deadpool and wolverine rated

Deadpool and Wolverine © 2024 Marvel Studios

Superhero movies have been around for nearly 50 years but have become a massive phenomenon in the past two decades, especially with the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These films are based on comic books, which first gained popularity in the U.S. during World War II as a form of propaganda. The combination of vivid images and short texts quickly captured the public’s imagination, leading to the creation of more superheroes and supervillains.

Marvel’s Origins: How Did It All Start?

Marvel Comics was founded in 1939 by Martin Goodman, with the Human Torch as its first superhero, debuting in the October issue of Marvel Comics #1. In March 1941, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby introduced the world to Captain America. The comic book industry grew rapidly, and Goodman enlisted the help of his nephew, Stanley Lieber, who would later become known as Stan Lee—the figure many American fans recognize from his cameos in the films.

After the war, superhero stories fell out of favor for a while. But in the 1960s, Marvel’s rival, DC Comics, released Justice League, which revived interest. In response, Marvel created The Fantastic Four, followed by hits like The Hulk, Spider-Man, and Iron Man. The appeal of these comics lay in their ability to present flawed, relatable characters with human problems, alongside their heroic abilities.

In the 90s, the comic book industry took a nosedive, forcing Marvel to sell off many of its superheroes to different film studios. Marvel’s luck began to change when the movie Blade hit theaters, followed by Iron Man, which laid the groundwork for what would become the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Why Do Kids Love Superheroes So Much?

The allure of Marvel’s films is easy to understand: flashy visuals, clear distinctions between good and evil, special effects, and humor. Kids enjoy the idea of having superpowers and love the simple yet action-packed plots.

Watching superhero movies is often compared to riding a rollercoaster—a rush of adrenaline without much effort. The excitement of seeing action scenes, combined with the emotional highs and lows, offers kids a thrilling experience. Hollywood filmmakers have mastered the art of keeping audiences engaged by blending quick dialogues with dynamic camera work that makes viewers feel like they’re part of the movie. It’s no wonder kids sometimes struggle to enjoy slower-paced films after experiencing the non-stop action of superhero movies.

Is It Normal for Kids to Idolize Superheroes?

Yes, it’s entirely normal for kids to look up to superheroes. Children need fantasy at every age. At first, it’s characters from fairy tales, like The Three Little Pigs, but as they grow older, they move on to other heroes, like Spider-Man, who transforms from a nerdy kid into a courageous, respected superhero. It’s natural for children to be drawn to such stories.

Of course, a child’s interests often depend on what they’re exposed to at home—whether they are offered age-appropriate content or left to explore independently.

At different ages, children are drawn to different types of heroes. Preschoolers often gravitate toward characters like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (DC), who are fun-loving, pizza-eating, and battle goofy, non-threatening villains. Older children may become interested in the X-Men, as these films touch on themes like friendship, misunderstanding, and even a bit of romance, which resonate well with teenagers. Meanwhile, viewers aged 16+ and 18+ tend to appreciate more serious films like Joker or Logan, which are imbued with a sense of noir and existential struggle—heroes in these stories face problems that can’t be solved with fists or superpowers.

Concerns for Parents: When to Be Cautious

While it’s healthy for children to enjoy superhero stories, there are some warning signs parents should watch for:

  • If your child loses interest in other activities or responsibilities like schoolwork.
  • If your child uses superhero play as an escape from real-life social interactions.
  • If they are spending excessive amounts of money on superhero-related merchandise.
  • If they genuinely believe in the existence of superheroes or express desires to join them.
  • If they consistently side with the villains, empathizing with their motives.

If you notice any of these signs, the first step is to talk to your child and try to understand their motives. If you’re concerned about their behavior, seeking guidance from a psychologist may be a good next step.

The Pros and Cons of Watching Superhero Movies

ORION PRODUCTION/Shutterstock.com

It’s impossible to say that superhero movies are entirely positive or completely negative. The key to evaluating them lies in the motivations of both heroes and villains. Unfortunately (or fortunately), modern films often portray complex characters, capable of both noble and selfish acts driven by malice or personal agendas.

Children’s understanding of good and evil takes time to develop, and it’s not until around the age of 12 that they can have a clearer sense of right and wrong. That’s why it’s essential to discuss these films with children after watching them. Talk about why the heroes and villains acted in certain ways and share your perspective on their actions.

сhild and adolescent psychologist.

Another crucial aspect is the values that these movies convey. It’s important to remember that Marvel movies, for instance, are heavily influenced by American ideals of success, power, and what it means to be a hero. For example, Iron Man’s genius is tied to his wealth, and Spider-Man wouldn’t have become who he is without that fateful spider bite. This kind of narrative, where power or success comes suddenly, can set unrealistic expectations for children and lead to disappointment.

Superhero movies may also not be suitable for sensitive children. The non-stop action, battles, and emotional highs and lows can be overwhelming for kids with more delicate nervous systems. Younger kids might even experience overstimulation or nightmares due to the fast-paced scenes and intense visual effects.

Moreover, after watching high-energy blockbusters, it might become difficult for children to appreciate slower, more thoughtful films. Movies with deep dialogues or complex themes can seem dull in comparison to the rapid action sequences of superhero flicks.

However, superhero movies do have their pros. Marvel movies, for example, are great for watching in a group setting, offering light entertainment that can make for a fun evening. But it’s still important that children’s moral education is rooted in wiser works of art.

The Kids360 app

When selecting superhero films or any movie for your child, it’s important to keep several factors in mind. Here are some tips to help you make better decisions:

  1. Check the movie rating, trailer, and reviews. If you’re unsure about a film’s content, it might be better to skip it.
  2. Watch the movie yourself first. Consider how appropriate it is for your child’s age and what lessons or messages the film may offer.
  3. Prioritize movies that convey positive messages. The true hero isn’t just someone in a costume, but someone capable of selflessness and sacrifice.
  4. Choose age-appropriate content. While it’s important to move beyond children’s cartoons, rushing to show them mature films isn’t necessary either.
  5. Avoid films with gratuitous violence, substance use, or excessive profanity. Such content is typically rated 18+ for a reason.

By using a parental control app like Kids360, you can monitor your child’s screen time, see what content they’re consuming, and even block inappropriate apps or websites. Try it for free today!

The world of movies is vast and exciting, and every year brings new films while old classics are rewatched by new generations. Helping children develop good taste in films and encouraging them to think critically about what they watch is key to nurturing their growing minds.

Watch movies with your children, discuss the themes, and share your own opinions. This will not only teach them to think critically but also strengthen your bond, turning movie nights into a cherished family tradition.
