What Adults Should Learn So They Don’t Fall Behind Their Own Kids

Only yesterday we were figuring out fax machines and pagers, and today AI agents build whole universes on the internet for us. The speed of change is impressive and, to be honest, a little scary: what will our future look like, and will we be able to keep up? What should we start learning now so we don’t end up hopelessly behind our own kids tomorrow?

💡 Spoiler: you don’t need to catch up with anyone. Just pick one item from the list below and start small.

What matters most

The main investment you can make is your relationship with your child. American researchers led by Carol Ford followed about 10,000 people from adolescence to ages 24 to 32 and found that warm relationships with mom and dad, heart-to-heart talks and time spent together are linked to better health in adult life, less stress and happier relationships with a partner.

🧠 Fact: this is an observational study, which means it shows a link, not a proven cause. But the investment is certainly worth making, and it’s free: heart-to-heart talks and time together cost nothing.

What you need to learn yourself

1. AI: more than “asking the chat”

The AI literacy framework prepared by the OECD and the European Commission lists four levels: understanding what AI does and where it makes mistakes (Engaging), creating with its help (Creating), deciding when it’s needed and when it isn’t (Managing), and understanding how it works (Designing). The first three are enough to start with.

🎯 Where to start: for a week, solve one real task a day with a chatbot, for example, writing a letter, planning a trip or going through a contract, and check the answer every time.

2. Automation and “agents”

AI has firmly entered our everyday life, and the skills to build it into work processes are becoming more in demand.

🎯 Where to start: set up one simple automation. For example, have a chatbot sort your email or put together a weekly news digest for you.

3. Cybersecurity and privacy

According to the World Economic Forum’s 2025 report, networks and cybersecurity rank second among the fastest-growing skills.

🎯 Where to start: a password manager, two-factor authentication wherever possible, a check of the privacy settings on social media and the habit of not trusting a voice or video without confirmation.

4. Reading data and numbers

Analytical thinking is first among the key skills: seven out of ten companies consider it essential.

🎯 Where to start: learn to read charts and ask the right questions. For example: “What was the sample?” and “What was it compared with?” One evening and a couple of articles on how to read studies is enough.

5. Digital creativity

Creative thinking is among the top five skills of the future.

🎯 Where to start: master one tool that kids use every day: short-video editing, design in Canva, a simple website or a bot without coding. Which one you choose depends on what your child is interested in.

6. Basic technological literacy

This is the third fastest-growing skill. According to a Pew Research Center survey of U.S. adults from February 2026, 66% of adults aged 18 to 29 and 61% of those aged 30 to 49 have used AI chatbots, compared with 42% of those aged 50 to 64 and 23% of those 65 and older.

🎯 Where to start: once a month, tackle something you’ve avoided so far: cloud storage, paying by QR code, online banking, new phone features. No need to do everything at once, one thing a month is enough.

🧠 Fact: only 7% of U.S. adults 65 and older use chatbots every day, compared with 34% of those aged 30 to 49. But use is rising in every age group, so it’s not too late to join in.

💡 Editorial tip: make your child your mentor. Ask them to show you one thing they use every week: an app, a feature or a meme. You’ll find out what language they speak, and they’ll feel that you’re interested.

In place of a conclusion

We don’t have to outrun our own kids. But it’s nice to understand what language they speak. Start with one item from the list. The rest will follow once the first one stops looking scary.
