Apple Picking

There’s nothing like biting into a crisp apple on a fall day. So why not take your kid apple-picking?

The best part of apple picking is that it creates a great learning experience. Your children will discover how apples are grown and the best way to pick them from the tree. You can also make plenty of goodies with your kids once you’ve picked your apples, including cider and baked goods.

While September is often the best month for apple picking, different varieties ripen throughout the fall. Check with your local orchards for the best dates and times.

Are you getting ready for Halloween? One of the best traditions for this holiday is to carve a pumpkin. So why not make the most of the experience and take the entire family to a farm to pick this year’s pumpkin together?

To find your nearest pumpkin patch, check out your local farms. Many farms that let you pick your family pumpkin offer additional outdoor fall activities like hay rides, corn mazes, and apple tastings.

Raking and jumping into the leaf pile is a classic outdoor fall activity for kids.

Once the leaves turn colors and fall from the trees, make it an outdoor activity with your kids to rake them up together. Once you’ve got a nice pile, let your kids enjoy the sensory experience of jumping into the crunchy leaves.

Fall Markets

Fall markets offer a wide range of produce, goodies, and even an autumn-themed game or two. Take your children to a fall market to teach them about the different types of vegetables, flowers, and other foliage they can find during this season.

When the leaves change colors, they make a stunning display. So take your kids on a nature walk to look for fallen leaves. Finding a big, beautiful leaf makes for a wonderful memory.

Collecting leaves is also a great fall activity because you can use them with your kids in many indoor craft activities.

Corn Maze

September and October are perfect months to try a corn maze. A corn maze is like an outdoor puzzle you and your children need to solve.

Your kids will love trying to find their way out, and some corn mazes even come with a built-in scavenger hunt.

To find a local corn maze, check out the farms where you can go apple or pumpkin picking first. These farms often include several outdoor fall activities in the same place.

Indoor Fall Activities

There’s plenty to do indoors too! Check out these examples of indoor fall activities.

Carving a pumpkin is a great autumn activity for your kids. You can let them be as creative as they want in drawing a creepy face or spooky image, and when the carving is finished, you can display their artwork on your porch for everyone to see.

Here’s a tip: don’t throw out the pumpkin seeds! Instead, you can have more indoor fun with your kids by roasting pumpkin seeds to enjoy as a snack.

Toddlers or kindergarten kids should get a little assistance in carving a pumpkin. The skin of a pumpkin is tough to cut, even for adults. Remember, safety comes first!

  • Apple Pie
  • Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Apple Chips

An indoor scavenger hunt takes a little time and prep work, but the fun is worth the effort! All you need to do is make a list of fall-themed items for your children to find, like a cozy sweater, festive fruit, etc., and have them check each item off the list as the item is located.

It’s also possible to set up an outdoor scavenger hunt if desired.

A movie marathon is fun, especially around Halloween.

The movies you choose to watch with your family depend on the age of your kids. For example, if your children are preschoolers or in kindergarten, the movies they will enjoy aren’t the same movies that a child in grade four will enjoy.

Here’s a great list to help put your movie marathon list together.

Haunted House

Approach this fun fall activity with caution. Some haunted house experiences bring scares that can affect your kids, so make sure it’s an age-appropriate event.

Check your local party store for Halloween decorations like wreaths, lights, cobwebs, skeletons, and more.

Left Center Right

Left Center Right is an excellent option if you’re looking for an easy, fast-paced dice game. Of course, you’ll need to invest in the specialty dice. However, instead of the 24 chips the game comes with, you can swap those out for candy or other Halloween treats.

The person with the most candy at the end of the game wins!

Help your child to make leaf rubbings using paper, pencils, crayons, or pencil crayons.

It’s also possible to create a leaf crown with the leaves from your backyard.

Apple Prints

Do you have a few leftover apples? Why not make apple prints with your kids!

You’ll need an apple, a knife, colorful paint, and paper for this craft.

  1. Use the knife to cut the apple in half.
  2. Let your child decide which colors to paint on the apple.
  3. Use the apple like a stamp on the paper provided.

You can create fun shapes in the apple if desired. However, make sure to keep the knife away from small children.
